On the opposite end of the spectrum from pink and yellow, blue is one of the rarest colours when it comes to cut flowers that serve as focal points in arrangements. Roses, gerberas, lilies, tulips, freesia, orchids, carnations, and chrysanthemums, to name just a few, have almost every hue under the sun with the exception of blue. However, recalling the phrase ‘when one door shuts another opens,’ the lack of blue varieties in many popular flowers seems to have opened the door for nature—along with skilled cultivators—to create some magnificent flowers that are either most popular or almost exclusively found in their blue shade, such as the hydrangea, iris, hyacinth, and delphinium. There are also many light purple or violet flowers which, when in certain colour combinations, can appear almost blue.
The meanings of blue flowers can be almost as calm and understated as the colour itself. The hydrangea, easily recognizable for its round, bushy blooms, symbolizes gratitude and understanding. The hyacinth, often uses as a vertical accent with its tall, stocky flowers, stands for consistency. Delphiniums, found as small accent flowers in many arrangements, symbolize big-heartedness, and the iris, with its delicately ruffled petals, symbolizes faith and hope.
While a cluster of hydrangea blooms are beautiful on their own, they can be accented by pairing their cool beauty with bright orange or yellow roses. Adding to the appeal of the hydrangea is that it can also be gifted as a potted plant, to be planted in one’s yard as a perennial landscape addition. In some parts of the world, the hydrangea is closely associated with mothers and is a common gift on Mother’s Day. The blue hydrangea, for a more coordinated arrangement, could also be combined with white chrysanthemums and lilac roses.
Blue irises would be beautiful in a bouquet on their own, but they could also be mixed with yellow irises to enhance the brightness and coolness of the respective flowers. For a springtime delight, irises could be combined with bright yellow daffodils as a birthday gift or ‘Get Well Soon’ sentiment. Irises could also be paired with white roses or gerberas for another pastel arrangement.
The diminutive delphinium serves as an accent in many arrangements, such as with pink roses, sunflowers, daffodils, and white and yellow gerberas. They could also be combined with bright pink or orange gerberas or mums for a dazzlingly bright display. Blue blooms make a fantastic addition or focus for any bouquet.
