Orange Flowers

The word orange must have been quite perplexing to poets throughout time, who likely often wanted to speak to the beauty and variety of the colour, but had no words with which to rhyme it.  Somewhere between the bold vibrancy of red with the sunny cheerfulness of yellow, orange blooms can brighten up even the dullest rooms, and because of this are often included in ‘Get Well Soon’ bouquets.  The popularity of the colour also makes it a common inclusion in birthday bouquets, as well as bridal and bridesmaids bouquets—although, one would hope that this is not in order to complement any unfortunate orange taffeta bridesmaids dresses reminiscent of embarrassing decades past.

Unlike red, which often means love, the orange varieties of flowers have a variety of meanings.  Orange roses mean desire and fascination, while orange lilies dismayingly mean hatred or dislike.  A gift of a bird of paradise, a large and unique-looking tropical flower, from a woman to a man symbolizes faithfulness.  Orange itself seems to be a colour of multitudes, and the shades of orange are perhaps only surpassed by the amount of flowers that you can find in one or many of them. 

Many popular flowers, such as roses, chrysanthemums, gerberas, lilies, calla lilies, orchids, tulips, and carnations come in orange shades, and many of these flowers in more than one shade of the colour.  Roses can come in shades so pale that they are almost cream to shades so vibrant that they rival the colour of the fruit itself.  Gerberas and chrysanthemums can also vary from pale oranges to nigh neon hues, with tulips coming in both peach-orange shades and truer orange varieties as well.  If you are seeking a monochromatic bouquet with a twist, choosing orange as your theme will surely get you there, as you can combine a variety of the shades and flowers for an attractive range of colour.

Orange is also very attractive paired with other colours, such as a combination of orange and white gerberas, orange gerberas with sunflowers and yellow gerberas, or bright orange roses paired with a blue hydrangea bloom.  For a summer-themed bouquet, orange gerberas and chrysanthemums could be combined with hot pink gerberas, sunflowers, and lime chrysanthemums, for an eye-catching display of exuberant colour.  A mixture or orange and white tulips would make a bright yet elegant display, while a combination of orange, yellow, and pink calla lilies would make a beautiful gift for a loved one.  On its own or with other colours, orange can be sure to brighten anyone’s day.
