Often associated with royalty, the stately colour of purple is a commendable choice in flowers despite the relative rarity of its availability, being only slightly more common than blue flowers. Purple has many characteristics in common with blue in terms of flora, in that the purple versions of many flowers are not as widely known or used as other colours. Again, however, like blue, there are several flowers that are available almost exclusively in purple, and in fact many purple flowers share their names with their shade, such as lilac, lavender, and violet.
If the colour purple is desired for a bouquet or arrangement, a florist might likely have to use more obscure flowers to include the shade. While roses, tulips, and gerberas do come in shades of purple, other sources of the colour could be stock, irises, delphiniums, and certain hydrangea blooms whose shade is closer to a light purple than blue. There are several purple flowers that appear to be almost blue, in contrast, and are often used for blue flowers in arrangements.
One flower in particular, the pansy, has many purple varieties, ranging from light pastel shades to royal shades so deep they appear almost black. Pansies can also be found in solid colours or with their famous ‘faces,’ and the purple flowers can come with yellow or white faces on them. A delightful flower, pansies are most commonly found in the springtime, as they cannot easily stand the heat of summer. As an added bonus, the pansy can be preserved through pressing, extending your enjoyment of this flower through its uses in decoration.
Purple flowers can be dazzling on their own—such as a bundle of deep purple tulips or light purple gerbera stems—but this colour also works well with so many others. For another springtime treat, purple irises could be paired with yellow daffodils, or purple tulips mixed with pink and white tulips for a feminine bouquet. Purple roses can often be seen with white and peach roses, for a pastel treat, while purple stock serves as a stunning vertical accent for many bouquets. Purple freesia as an accent for orange gerberas and white roses would be another appealing bouquet. Choose this regal colour for your bouquets and they will be sure to please any recipient for all occasions.
