Sunflowers, for example, are very popular, and if they are the favourite flower of your loved one, would be more appropriate to give them as opposed to a more traditional flower that they might not appreciate as much. A rainbow array of gerberas or tulips, for example, coming in reds, oranges, yellows, and pinks, might be more appealing to someone rather than the traditional red rose.
